C harming box with magnetic closure that holds four empty ornaments. The ornaments can be filled with a variety of things: teas, bath salts, candies..... you name it! Perfect DIY boxed gift set.
Project Recipe
You will need three pieces of cardstock.
Box Base: 8 3/8 x 6 3/8
Box Cover: 9 1/8 x 6
Ornament Divider: 11 1/2 x 3 1/2
You can make the entire box out of the same color or use the same color for the cover and base and make the divider piece a contrasting color or neutral.
Take the ornament divider strip. If desired, stamp a pattern on the paper before scoring and folding.
Score at: 1 3/8, 3 3/8, 4 3/4, 6 3/4, 8 1/8, 10 1/8
Flip the paper over.
Score at: 2 3/8, 5 3/4, 9 1/8
Fold along your score lines. Your second set of scores will be the "peaks" and should be folded in the opposing direction to the first set.
Add tear tape as show on image.
Remove waxed cover from tape and stick sides together.
Set divider aside.
Take the Box Base (8 3/8 x 6 3/8)
Score at 1 3/8 on all sides.
Trim flaps as shown.
Decorate the box base BEFORE putting it together. It is so much easier to adhere decorative strips on a flat surface.
You only need to decorate three side of the box base. I like the look of two layers, but you might just want one.
First layer: One at 1 1/8 x 5 3/8 and two at 1 1/8 x 3 3/8
Second layer: One at 7/8 x 5 1/8 and two at 7/8 x 3 1/8
Assemble and add extra tear tape as shown but do not remove the waxed paper yet! Add a few strips of tear tape to the inside bottom of the box as well.
To make the magnetic closure, cut a piece of cardstock that matches your bottom decorative layer at 2 1/2 x 1 1/8.
Score at 1 3/8.
Cut another piece a 1 1/8 x 1 1/8
cover the square portions of cardstock with tear tape. Center the magnet on the square and then align the two squares together.
put tear tape on the long side of the cardstock to adhere to the box base.
Center magnetic tab on long decorated side of the box base. You can add a second layer, 7/8 x 1 1/8, to this piece if you wish.
Check to make sure the ornament divider fits inside the box base. Trim if needed. Peel up the tape cover and adhere the ornament divider to the inside of the box base.
Peel the tape cover off of the FLAPS only and finish box base assembly.
Set aside leaving the tape cover on the bottom and fourth side of the box alone.
Now we make the cover (9 1/8 x 6)
Score at 3 7/8 and 5 1/4
To decorate you will need the following pieces:
First layer: one at 1 1/8 x 5 3/4 and three at 5 3/4 x 3 5/8 (the third piece if for the inside cover when the box is opened)
Second layer: one 7/8 x 5 1/2 and two at 5 1/2 x 3 3/8
Do not adhere the INSIDE decorative piece just yet.
Now that the outside cover is decorated, it is time to put it all together.
I find it is easiest to get the box base centered in the cover by sicking the spine down first.
Peel tape cover off the fourth side of the box. Lay the cover down flat. Center the box base on the spine - you will have about 3/16 overhang on each side. Once satisfied with position, press firmly.
Then peel cover from the bottom of the box base, fold down and align with cover.
Almost done!
Now we attach the second magnet for the closure. The magnets I use are polarized so make sure you sick the right side up!
Set the second magnet on top of the one in your flap. Put a glue dot on the exposed side. Close the top lid so it aligns as you want, press firmly enough to adhere the glue dot to the cover.
Lift carefully. Your second magnet should now be attached to the inside cover. Press more firmly now and add extra tear tape around the magnet. Adhere the decorative piece you cut for the inside cover to hide the magnet.
Finish decorating the cover of you box with any other embellishments you choose!
